Spain History and Culture

July 27, 2009 |13:53 | Fun Places to visit | Reviews  By : Team X

Spain History and CultureSpain is a country crisscrossed with Mountain ranges, and nearly surrounded by water. A country where you can be swimming or sailing in the Mediterranean, and an hour later skiing or hiking the high snow capped mountains. It has an extraordinary heritage of history, art and culture. Historically it has been a melting pot - and this is the legacy that has created a unique and stunning culture. Basques, Iberians, Celts, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors, Christians have all at one time make it their own. All have left a part of their culture to be intertwined into the new... The Result is a country filled with passion, art, flamenco, bullfighting, splashes of Moorish Africa, fiestas, culinary delights, fiercely patriotic regions,  and much more...

Balboa Island

July 6, 2009 |14:07 | Fun Places to visit | Vacations, Tourist Spots  By : Team X

This is an island in the sense that it is surrounded by water. It sits snugly in Newport harbor and is full of small houses starting around $500.000 and going up in the millions as a small percentage of them are on the water. It's fun to walk up and down the main street and look at the stuff in the shop windows. You can buy a frozen banana with nuts there if you like. The island is located at the west end of Jamboree Road off the 405 or 73 freeways. When you get in town, if you go to the second stop sign and turn right. Then go down about a half a mile and turn left where it says 'Balboa ferry'. If you never drove your car on a boat this is the time. It's around $2.00 for the driver and car then $1.00 for each walk on. You can take your bike across also. On the other side is a fun zone with a merry-go-round, lots of food and things for the kids. There are boat charters and boat rentals also. It's fun to take the island cruise and learn where all the movie stars live plus many famous people. Prior to getting on the ferry on the island side try the hamburger place right on the corner. It's old fashion good. Then you can walk south (provided you can find a parking place) and sit on the public pier and eat. The public pier is blue with a small sign denoting public. It's the only place you will find that is on the water that's not private

Bad economy pushes visitors through zoo gates

Bad economy pushes visitors through zoo gatesTo draw visitors, zoos count on gentle giraffes rolling out their long tongues to grasp treats, stingrays gliding through a pool to be petted and the playful tussling of tiger cubs. This year they're also getting help from the recession.
Zoos in cities including Cincinnati, St. Louis, Baltimore, Kansas City, Mo., and Memphis, Tenn., report higher attendance as consumers look for affordable entertainment closer to home.
"We are trying to be more careful in our spending, and this is a great way to do that and be with family," said Noelle Bragg, 42, of Springboro, about 35 miles from Cincinnati. "Gas prices are rising again, and we don't have to drive far to have a really good time."
Bragg, her son and nephew had just finished feeding a giraffe at the Cincinnati Zoo.
More than 58 percent of 120 members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums responding to an April survey reported attendance increases year-over-year.

D-day-notes

The D-day beaches of Normandy offer stunning beauty and awe-inspiring stories of courage. On 6th June 1944, the greatest invasion force in history gathered on the south coast of England and set sail for Northern France on what General Eisenhower called the “Great Crusade” to liberate Europe from the Nazis.

D-Day was to be one of the most important days of World War 2, and turned the tide in favour of the Allied forces. The northern coastline of towering cliffs and glorious beaches remain the scars of the historic campaign.

Carnival

June 12, 2009 |09:01 | Fun Places to visit  By : Team X

Carniva

Undoubtedly one of the best in Europe, the Carnival in Madeira is a guarantee for endless fun and entertainment!Traditionally there are two Carnival parades in Madeira, which are very different from each other. The most important one, the allegoric parade, which takes place always on the Saturday of the Carnival weekend, is the more sophisticated one and needs a great deal of commitment and organisation from all the groups and the people involved. Numerous Samba groups with thousands of participants in magnificent and colourful costumes dance to electrifying Samba music through the streets of Funchal, spreading an ambiance evoking the Carnival of Rio.

The second parade, called ‘trapalhão’, traditionally floods the streets of the city centre with thrilling joy on ‘Mardi gras’ (Tuesday ending the Carnival period). In this parade everybody can take part and the – sometimes quite daring – costumes and depicted caricatures are left to the participants’ own imagination. Both parades have a defined itinerary in the city centre and end at the Municipal Square where more entertainment with live music and costume competitions is provided. At least one month before the Carnival peak time the best-known and established Carnival groups visit the hotels and entertain the guests with dance and music performances
