River cruising has never been more popular. Here, Caroline Hendrie picks some of the greatest trips on Europe's rivers, exploring historic sites, and a wonderful chance to see North America and Canada in the Fall. All prices based on two sharing.

It's the North American 'leaf peeping' ritual with a difference. Glorious Fall colours are reflected in the Hudson river on a journey from New York to Montreal on small ship Grande Mariner. After a night in a Manhattan hotel you'll sail past the Statue of Liberty up the Hudson River. Optional excursions include a visit to Franklin D. Roosevelt's estate Springwood, housing his library and museum.
The cruise continues on the picturesque Erie canal to Lake Ontario with visits from local lecturers and a folkloric group along the way. Crossing into Canada you join the St Lawrence Seaway to Quebec City and there is a good chance of seeing whales with an on-board naturalist at the mouth of the Saguenay River en route to Montreal.
