London hotels have been ranked the worst in Europe, according to a comparison website. A survey by Trivago.co.uk found that out of 1,000 towns and cities throughout the continent, the UK capital's hotels garnered the lowest collective score by the site's users. Out of 100 points, London notched up 72.2 - beaten by Birmingham, which scraped in at 74.15. The only towns to score less than London included Sliema in Malta (71.00) plus Lloret del Mar (69.57) and El Arenal (66.78) in Spain.

But fans of our capital need not fear as city break favourites such as Copenhagen (74.29), Amsterdam (74.42) and Paris (74.58) also lingered near the bottom of the list. Trivago pointed out that room price and hotel quality had a major impact on reviewer rankings, which may be reflected in the results as London is an expensive city. The company added: 'Nevertheless, such price and quality considerations are true for all cities, and in contrast to London and Birmingham, many other cities have significantly better ratings.
