In
France you can’t forget the beautiful town
Carcassonne. It is situated in the Langue doc region of
France, in the south of the country. This is a wonderful romantic place. There are views of the
Pyrenees. The town makes an interesting stop on a touring holiday, and can be combined with themed trips to Cathar country.
Carcassonne is also a pleasant destination for the weekend tripper, with budget flights from Stansted making the town an easy and affordable destination.
Carcassonne is made up of two towns; the walled Cité on its hill, and below, over the River Aude, the Bastide Saint-Louis. The Bastide, or Ville Basse, is the lower town. The earlier, fortified hilltown dates back to the 6th century BC, when there was a Gaulish settlement on the site. This was succeeded by a Roman town. The large defensive walls which can be seen today were constructed over the centuries, as Carcassanne became a tourist spot especially for loved ones and honey moons. Many of the foundations and lower stretches of wall date back to the Roman era.
The walls, the buildings, the make up over all of the town is simply amazing and out of the world. There has been a lot of changes made in the town since its origin but most of the walls and towers are still original are at their best. An exhibition of sketches and paintings in the castle shows the views on reconstructions made for the town and those sights are beautiful execution of remembrance of the changes done for their town.
