It is easy to get swept up into the beautiful capital of Spain, Madrid. From day time highlights, such as three of the best museums in Europe or bull fighting, to the always busy night life, Madrid can keep any visitor or local busy.

But there comes a time in any trip where the traveler may feel the need to escape from the city. Luckily, in addition to being a world class city, Madrid is also very close to some amazing places within an hour's ride. Take a day to enjoy a part of Spain that might not be geographically far, but will feel like worlds away.

Instructions-Think about mountains and recent Spanish history. You will spend less than an hour on the local train to arrive at San Lorenzo De El Escorial, but when you get off you will find yourself in the mountains of north Madrid. Walk up the hill to the city and make your way first to the massive former monastery.

Built in the 16th century, this monastery/royal getaway/intellectual center is unforgettable. Enormous in scale from outside and full of interesting pieces from its original time period, it's easy to spend hours enjoying the building and grounds. After visiting the monastery and the town, it's also possible to continue to The Valley of the Fallen (El Valle de Los Caidos), where the right-wing civil war memorial and former dictator's tomb is.

Step2 -Segovia Think about food and authentic villages. A little farther to the north, right outside the Madrid province, is Segovia. This town's claim to fame is an amazingly well preserved Roman aqueduct that runs right through the middle of the town. Only a few miles away is the Spanish Versailles, La Granja de San Ildefonso, which boasts a lovely palace and beautiful gardens, complete with a labyrinth.

This authentic Spanish town and excellent roasted pig make Segovia a favorite day trip among tourists and Madrid natives alike. Step3 Aranjuez Think about proximity to beautiful gardens. A short train ride away are the beautiful gardens of the palace of Aranjuez. You can relax in this small town south of Madrid and enjoy the amazing European style gardens in only a morning, leaving the afternoon free for other things. It's a beautiful stop and a perfect short escape from the city.

Step4 Toledo Decide on the must-see. Probably the most popular day trip from Madrid is the nearby city of Toledo. Located just half an hour away by fast speed train, or an hour away by bus or car, this city is a step back in time.

Famously known as the City of the Three Cultures, for its many centuries of Muslim, Jewish and Christian inhabitants, Toledo is now visited for its narrow streets, Mudejar architecture, exquisite cathedral and world famous swords. Toledo won't disappoint you with its architecture and old world feel, but be prepared for large amounts of fellow tourists.
